Why Brent knows what he is talking about:
I have had my office in a personal training gym since 2006 and have worked with a wide variety of kinesiologists, strength and conditioning coaches, and exercise physiologists as well as uneducated (but motivated) people that took a weekend course and call themselves personal trainers. I have seen people transform their bodies for the better and for the worse by going to the gym regularly. I have also had the opportunity to work with and teach a number of Pilates and yoga instructors and again have seen some people get better while others get worse doing yoga. Personally, I stopped working out with weights regularly in 2006 and although I am not quite as toned as I used to be, I am now functionally stronger, more flexible and more pain free than I have ever been due to an increase in body awareness and functional movement patterns. I am not against weight training by any means, but I have found that the people that would benefit the most from Pilates/yoga tend to choose weight/cardio training and those that should do weight/cardio training tend to chose yoga/pilates. This phenomenon is based largely on personality and peoples' tendency to migrate towards what they are good at instead of challenging themselves to learn why, how and what they are bad at. This website will challenge you to learn what you are bad at by starting with the Six Degrees of Movement and progressing to weight training, sports and motherhood.
